The change towards modern skydiving has happened during the beginning of the 80’s with the ram air canopy. This event makes a great change as the parachute ,up until that moment, used to be in a spherical shape and purely with air dynamic brakes, instead the new parachute becomes a real aeronautic machine.
Thanks to its rectangular shape, it uses the physical principle of the carrying capacity which allows the skydiver not only to land on his feet but also has increased considerably the manoeuvrings of the parachute and so the quality and quantity of the movements in the air. The skydiver doesn’t have to land anymore where the wind takes him, but with the new parachute it is possible to turn left and right and gently land. Also the freefall has several advantages with the new parachute, in fact free falling is the base of skydiving and since this new event the jumping height has increased but not only that, also the aircrafts and the drop zones.
It’s during that period that the pc6 porter (better known as pilatus) first appear, this aircraft carries 8/10 people at a height of 3,500 mt. It’s only during the 90’s that the twin-engine aircrafts appear. The advantages of these new aircrafts is immediately evident as they reach a height of 4’500 mt and carry groups of 20/25 people. This has created new disciplines such as “” free-fly” which is today on of the worldwide tendency
